Do you know someone currently in grades 9-12 who is interested in learning to compose for live instruments?
Led by the musicians of Brightwork ensemble and composer-mentor in residence Nina Shekhar, Brightwork is excited to announce the second year of the High School Composer Initative:
- No cost to apply or participate
- Six month program (January - June 2022) includes composition lessons, mentoring and workshops taught by Brightwork, Nina Shekhar and special guest artist
- Small cohort (6-10) allows for personalized learning experience
- Opportunities to learn as a group, and one on one with artists
- Hybrid model will include in person events and some remote lessons
- Compose a piece for small ensemble (flute, clarinet, violin, cello)
- Ends with public performance and recording of your new piece
Who should apply?
This program is open to students currently in 9-12 grade who reside or attend school in LA County. Students who are already composing are encouraged to apply. However, students who fall into any of these categories who may not be composing yet, are also encouraged to apply.
Students who:
- may not have prior experience composing for live instruments but who are interested in learning
- are passionate about music, play an instrument or sing, and are curious about composing
- may not read music notation but have created songs, beats, or musical projects using Ableton, GarageBand or other music technologies
- create music as improvisers or songwriters, who may not label themselves as composers
Students from groups that have been historically underrepresented in the field of classical music composition are especially encouraged to apply.
About Nina Shekhar, our composer-mentor in residence: Composer Nina Shekhar is a sought-after young artist whose works have been performed by Eighth Blackbird, International Contemporary Ensemble, and ETHEL. Current projects include commissions from Albany Symphony, Lyris Quartet, New York Youth Symphony, and violinist Jennifer Koh. Her music will be performed by the LA Phil in January 2021, and later in the spring by the New York Philharmonic.
