NEW CALIFORNIA ARTS ED DATA!
We partnered with SRI Education, with funding from the Hewlett Foundation’s Performing Arts Program, to release Creativity Challenge: The State of Arts Education in California. The report compares the 2019-2020 school year to data from 2005-2006 to show that though some schools have made incremental improvements in providing high-quality arts education, nearly nine in ten schools in California fail to provide state-mandated arts education.
Key findings in the report include:
-
Only 11 percent of California schools offered classes that align with standards set by California in all four arts disciplines (music, dance, theater, and visual arts); that number remained unchanged between the two study periods.
-
Elementary schools, court and community schools, and schools serving high proportions of children from low-income families provide less arts instruction.
-
Schools serving more low-income families or majority-students-of-color populations faced more barriers to increasing arts instruction.
Let’s ensure ALL California students have access to a quality arts education!
