Produced by the Palm Springs Opera Guild of the Desert over the past thirty-five years, the Palm Springs Vocal Competition has awarded scholarships to hundreds of young men and women who are preparing for a career in the operatic arts. The finalists, selected through an auditioning process, perform before a live audience. The finals judges include professionals charged with discovering new talent for their opera productions.

 2022 Palm Springs Vocal Competition is set for December 3 at the CV Rep Theatre in Cathedral City. 

APPLY FOR THE PS OPERA GUILD COMPETITION

Applicants must submit a non-refundable application fee of $45. Applicants must be between the ages of 21 and 34 as of December 3, 2022, and reside in the Western United States (AK, AZ, CA, CO, HI, ID, MT, NM, NV, OK, OR, TX, UT, WA, WY) may apply. *Previous first prize winners of the Palm Springs Opera Guild Vocal Competition are ineligible to compete.* Transportation to and from the semi-finals and the competition site in the Greater Palm Springs area is the sole responsibility of the applicant. All applicants must be available between the hours of 11 am to 4 pm on Saturday, November 5, 2022 (a second date, November 6, 2022 may be added depending on the number of applicants {this will not be determined until closer to Sept} and it is advised to keep this date open). Finalists must be available to perform on Saturday, December 3, 2023 between 1 pm and 4 pm in greater Palm Springs and January 31, 2023 or February 1, 2023. The January 31/February 1, 2023, date is a debut solo recital for the Palm Springs Vocal Competition winner.This is a requirement.

A minimum of 25 semi-finalists will be selected based on video submissions, bio, and resume. The in-person semi-finals will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2022 (& possibly Nov 6), onsite at the Rancho Mirage Library campus. Semi-finalists will be notified on or before October 17, 2022, if they qualify for in-person audition.

4 OPERATIC ARIAS (see directions below), a video submission of you singing, a current headshot, a short (less than 100 word) bio, and resumé to the Palm Springs Opera Guild CEO, Laurie@palmspringsoperaguild.org.

Aria criteria: Choose 4 operatic arias that demonstrate your strongest qualities. Once the arias are submitted on the application, no changes are permitted. At least two foreign languages must be represented in the 4 selected arias. Include the name of the aria, opera, and composer.

Video upload criteria: 1 -2 videos submissions in mp4 format or a link.

Be prepared to sing any or all of the arias listed during all phases of the Competition. If chosen to move forward to the live-preliminary auditions, you may sing the first aria of your choice and the judges may or may not ask for a second, depending upon time constraints. Excessively long arias are not advised.

Deadline: Send the above info/application and uploads to Laurie@palmspringsoperaguild.org by October 14, 2022, to be considered. Late entries will not be accepted. You will be notified if you have been accepted into the live semi-finals phase of the competition by Oct. 17, 2022. ​

Live Audition Attire: Tea-length dress; Dress shirt and pants

​Accompanist: Accompanist provided or you may bring your own. If you use the PS Opera Guild's accompanist, please provide a binder with all arias clearly marked, legible and double-sided. Please do not bring music in plastic page sleeves, anthologies or vocal scores.

Prizes: Over $30,000 will be awarded. 1st Place - $10,000 and featured at a solo recital concert in Palm Springs area on January 31, 2023 or February 1, 2023 (you must be available on this date). Cash scholarships will be provided for the remaining 7 finalists (various amounts). Additionally, each finalist may be showcased at an additional PS Opera Guild event during the season.
