    BACKGROUND

    The Music Center (Performing Arts Center of Los Angeles County) is a leader at the cultural heart of Los Angeles, bringing to life one of the world’s premier arts destinations by creating opportunities for arts participation, enabling compelling programming, arts education, and providing first-class facilities and services. The Music Center strives to deepen the cultural life of every resident of Los Angeles County and continue creating an increasingly relevant, multidisciplinary performing arts center. 

    The Music Center is looking to fill three internship positions: Civic Engagement, Marketing, & Production.2023 Arts Internship positions will be open to currently enrolled undergraduate (2 or 4-year) and community college students who reside or attend college in Los Angeles County. Recent graduates may apply as long as they have completed their degree between May 1 - December 1, 2023. The Department of Arts and Culture encourages eligible students from all ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, as well as disabled students, to apply. Eligible students may participate in the program only once.

    • Note: Students who have already earned a BA, BS, or a higher degree are not eligible for the Los Angeles County Arts Internship Program.
    • Students who have previously participated in the program are not eligible to participate a second time.
    • Students must possess the legal right to work in the United States.
    • Students who are invited to participate in the program will be asked to provide verification of eligibility via college transcripts, driver’s license, and other documents to show enrollment status and/or LA County residence.

    PERFORMING ARTS CENTER OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY - CIVIC ENGAGEMENT INTERN

    DESCRIPTION

    The Civic Engagement Intern will support The Music Center’s signature Dance DTLA summer series on the Jerry Moss Plaza and implement up to nine (9) civic engagement activities. Activities may range from a voter registration booth to visual art-making workshops. In collaboration with The Music Center staff and external partners, they will realize and reflect on a range of weekly activities and propose new and refined approaches to integrating additional civic engagement strategies into this free participatory event. Along the way, the intern’s project progress will be marked by two presentations: one that reflects on the implementation; and the other offering recommendations for future activations. The intern may also provide support on the development of a Fall program and civic activation of the Jerry Moss Plaza. This position will work approximately 25 hours/week from June through September with approximate nine (9) Friday evenings
     

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Interest in the Los Angeles arts and cultural sector as well as the social service sector preferred. The intern must demonstrate cultural sensitivity and competency. Bi-lingual English/Spanish preferred. 
    Experience required for MS Office Suite and technology-based communications (Microsoft 
    Teams, Zoom), as well as full proficiency in computer use.  
     
    Have strong communication, social and strong problem-solving skills, strong team player ability. 
    Must be resourceful and self-directed to complete tasks with tight deadlines. 
     
    Highly dependable and punctual; must have a reliable source of transportation. Ability to 
    travel for occasional offsite events, work remotely, and/or available to work some nights and weekends, 
    as necessary. Must be able to work in different environments such as home, office, theater, 
    and outdoor environments. 
     
    Comfort in a customer facing setting including working in an outdoor public space interacting with a high volume of people.  
     
    Familiarity with standard arts production practices including technical production, and house management, a plus, but not necessary. 

     

    PERFORMING ARTS CENTER OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY - MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS INTERN

    DESCRIPTION

    The Music Center’s Marketing and Communications intern will create and implement a marketing strategy for The Music Center’s Dance DTLA in summer 2023. The intern will be engaged in all aspects of the promotion for this series, including social and digital media strategy, media relations, collateral development and distribution, and research and analytics, among other tasks. Importantly, the intern will gain significant hands-on knowledge and experience in a high-energy, fast-paced, collaborative environment and will gain important transferable skills that can be leveraged for future opportunities in marketing for the arts and/or other nonprofit organizations. The intern will work approximately 35 hours per week from June through October 2022. 
     

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Qualified candidates will possess a creative mindset and problem-solving skills and an ability to think critically. Strong project management and organizational skills are required, as well as the ability to effectively communicate information and ideas in a written and verbal format. The candidate must be willing to collaborate with all colleagues and have a keen interest in marketing and communications. Experience using MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook) is required; working knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite is a plus. 
     

     

    PERFORMING ARTS CENTER OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY - PRODUCTION INTERN

    DESCRIPTION

    The Production intern will provide support to the Music Center’s Producing Department, specifically to the Dance Downtown LA (DDTLA) series of free dance and music evenings on the Music Center Plaza and in Grand Park. They will take part in the entire process of managing production budgets, contracts, communicating with and coordinating vendors, scheduling work calls, gathering artist production information, and will work up to taking on the overall production management of one of the eight events. This intern will receive hands-on experience with all aspects of event production from the logistics and administrative work leading up to an event, to the day-of prep and coordinating, to post-show tasks and communication. 

    As one of the largest performing arts centers in the country, The Music Center will expose the intern to the best production practices that bring high-quality artistic experiences and community-driven events to life. 
     
    The position will work approximately 35 hours a week from June through August with program days including nights and weekends.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Qualified candidates will possess a creative mindset, a readiness to collaborate in a team environment, be organized and have a strong ethic of individual responsibility. Familiarity with Microsoft Outlook and Excel are necessary, along with good written and verbal communication skills.  They will possess the ability to take initiative in carrying out responsibilities with professionalism.  Ideal candidates must have an interest in event production and be able to read and understand a small program budget.

    The Production intern will actively engage with vendors and artist representatives, communicate with and collect information from other Music Center staff and departments, assemble production schedules, track and process invoices, coordinate production equipment and facilities, and be part of the staff managing each event.
